Handout 1

A letter
Dear Svitlana,
Do you remember me? I was in Ukraine 4 years ago. We met at your school. I had a good chance to communicate with your students and teach them.
I liked your country and traditions. I was greatly surprised about your national cuisine, especially cooked and canned food.
Yon know, we don’t spend so much time for cooking. And there are so many women who can cook only simple dishes and, of course, they can bake cakes and do bottling.
I’m going to visit Ukraine in March again. And I’ll do it with pleasure. Can we meet?
See you soon.
Yours truly,

Handout 2

Match two parts of the proverbs.

Handout 3

Complete the text with the words from the box. Some people … English food. They say it’s unimaginable, boring, tasteless and … . It’s chips with everything and totally vegetables.
The basic … when fresh, are so full of flavour that the British haven’t had to invent sauces to disguise their natural taste. What can compare with fresh pees or new potatoes just boiled and served with butter? Why drown spring lamb in wine or cream and spices, when with just one or two herbs it is absolutely delicious?
If you ask foreigners to name some typically English dishes, they will probably say “… and chips” then stop. It is … but true that there is no tradition in England of eating in restaurants, because the food doesn’t lend itself to such preparation. English cooking is found at home. So it is … to find a good English restaurant with … prices.
In most cities in Britain you’ll find Indian, Chinese, French and Italian restaurants. In London you’ll also find Indonesian, Mexican, Greek ones. Cynics will say that this is  because English have no “cuisine” themselves, but this is not quite true.

Handout 4

Match the country with the traditional dishes
